Cornea Center
The cornea is a clear, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye. The main function of the cornea is to allow light to pass into the eye so that it can reach the lens and the retina in the back of the eye. This is why it is important for the cornea to be transparent. The second function of the cornea is to focus light, similar to a camera lens. The cornea accounts for two-thirds of the eye’s total optical power. Cornea health is extremely important to your vision and is dependent on certain factors such as health of the conjunctiva and the eyelids. The conjunctiva is tissue that covers the front of the eyeball except the cornea and is also lined in the back of the eyelids. Both contain glands producing tear fluid, an essential part of cornea health. Cornea diseases can cause distorted vision or even loss of vision.
Common corneal diseases and disorders
- Corneal Abrasions – caused by trauma resulting in the loss of the surface epithelial layer of the cornea
- Corneal Dystrophy – a build up of cloudy material causing one or more parts of the cornea to lose clarity
- Fuchs’ Dystrophy – cloudy morning vision
- Keratitis – inflammation of the cornea
- Keratoconus – degenerative disease where the cornea thins and becomes cone-shaped.
